So much time....so little to do.

Is it possible to be addicted to job hunting? I now find myself constantly checking my e-mail and job boards for new "opportunities." I put the word opportunities in quotations because the term is relative. It's only an opportunity of someone actually gets back to you!!! If no one responds then it's just an internet leech taking up space in the world wide web.

I guess this is what happens when you don't have a job. I've been in this position before but the difference this time is that I actually want a job....and I mean really want one. I've done my share of soul searching, sort of speak, after I was laid off over a year ago but now it's time to join society again. I guess the worst part is having that job your really wanted so close to you then having it taken away so quickly that it gives you whiplash. For those of you who know what I'm talking about, you'll share my frustration when I say, Ugh....WTF?!?!

Now I know that we don't like to be identified by the job we do....I mean it's just a job right? See that's where you're wrong! People you meet do define you by the work you do. It's what they think of when they recall who you are. They say, "Oh Lisa, the nurse, right?" or "I know Kevin! He's the accountant!" So those of us who do not belong to the now exclusive The Economy Sucks But I'm Still Employed Club (yeah....they are trying to come up with a better name) then what do you say when someone you hear those four dreadful words, "What do you do?" A long "ummmm" always precedes your response; such as "I'm in between jobs" or "I'm taking some [involuntary] time off." For me, I can say I'm still in school....which is completely true, by the way, but I mainly say it to hide behind the fact that I don't have that defining quality that people look for at first encounters.

So what to do to fill these long days and nights as a non-productive-but-would-like-to-be member of society? YOU START (or resume in my case) BLOGGING ABOUT IT!!!!

THE END (for now)

When someone asks what you're doing now, don't say you're out of work, because you're not. You're just not getting paid.. Talk about the projects you've done and what you're learning, and then mention, 'I'm looking for a paid position like this.' =)
